Mather-Bowes Wins Mid-Amateur Championship

Margie Mather-Bowes of Mt. Anthony won the 2000 VSWGA Mid-Amateur Championship over the weekend at Neshobe Golf Club. Following an opening day round of 75 with a final round of 78, Margie posted an impressive eleven stroke victory over 1998 champion Jeanne Morrissey of Williston and defending champion Ann O'Day of Country Club of Vermont. Jeanne, hampered all weekend by a pulled neck muscle, followed an opening round of 88 with Sunday's low round of 76 to move up into the second place tie. Andy Sak of Neshobe, Nancy Divoll of Bellows Falls, Ann Goodrich of Burlington tied for 4th with totals of 168, one stroke ahead of Cindy Paquet of Essex who was in second place after Saturday's round. Mary Jane Shomo of Rutland finished in 8th place.

Although Margie may not familiar to some, she is a native Vermonter who grew up in Bennington. She has been living in Massachesetts for the past fourteen years but is now engaged to the Mt. Anthony head professional David Soucy (who currently stands in second place in the Vermont PGA standings). With a very successful 2000 season which includes a 5th place finish in the New Englands, a second place finish in the State Amateur, and two major wins in Massachesetts (the Boston Open and the Footjoy-Tarlow), Margie plans to play the Futures Tour qualifier in Lakeland, Florida in November. If she qualifies, she will turn pro immediately and play the Futures Tour next season. If not, she plans to play amateur golf for one more season before becoming a teaching pro. She has already passed her Players Ability Test and has two years to declare her professional status.

The Low Net winner was Lori Drumm of Rocky Ridge with a net total of 135, 8 strokes better than runner-up Mary Ann Oliver of Neshobe. Lee Monte, Sue Ming, and Nancy Gorham were tied for 3rd at 145 followed by Mary Frances Tobin and Ellen Sheffer at 146 and Sally Guerette at 147.
