Vermonter Named to Women's Eastern Golf Association Board

Shari Pfannenstein of Rutland was named to the Women's Eastern Golf Association executive board last summer. Shari developed and maintains their website www.womenseastern.org and is heading their Rules Committee. Shari is also the Rules Chair for the VSWGA.

The WEGA Championship is unique in that it is the only major women's amateur tournament that is played with a medal play format. Several Vermonters including Sue Horton and Kiersten Allbright have participated in this championship in recent years. WEGA also hosts a Senior Amateur Championship for women over 50. Shari worked on her first WEGA event at this Seniors' Championship last fall at Houndslake CC in Aiken, SC. She describes that atmosphere as fiercely competitive but yet a bit more relaxed and "homey" than the regular championship. She is hoping some Vermonters will participate in this event in the future.

In addition to her appointment to WEGA, last December Shari was invited to join the USGA's Women's Amateur Public Links Championship Committee. This means that she will be going to the National Championship this June in Sun River, Oregon where she will be helping to run the tournament including serving on the Rules committee. Another aspect of her duties on the Public Links committee is to host a regional qualifier for the 2002 Championship. She has secured Okemo Valley Golf Club on May 29, 2002 as a qualifying site! It would be great if we had some Vermonters try to qualify for this prestigous event.

The sectional qualifier is an 18-hole stroke play event to be played on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 (rain date of Thursday, May 30, 2002). There is no handicap limit. For more information on this, check the news item Public Links Qualifier.

Congratulations to Shari on her appointments at the national level!
