First Match Play Championship a Success

Back Row: Jan Edwards, Ellen Currie, Kathy Allbright, Missy Jasmin

Front Row: Regi Wahl, Maureen Quinn, Cindy Paquet, Kathy Domenicucci

The first VSWGA Match Play Championship was held this past weekend (June 13-15) at Crown Point Country Club.  The tournament was a success despite the weather and a smaller than hoped for field.  The field of twenty-nine players, bolstered by large and enthusiastic contingents from Williston, Rutland, and Crown Point, played a qualifying round Friday afternoon enduring a steady rain.  The qualifying round was used, along with handicap, the determine the flight a player was placed in and the seeding position in that flight.  The Championship and First flights had eight players each and the second and third flights had six and seven players respectively.

Cindy Paquet, of Essex and Neshobe, was the medalist in the qualifying round with a score of 79.  Kristin Turcotte-Mahoney of Rutland was seeded second in the Championship flight with a score of 83.  Wendy Drolette of Williston was the top seed in the First flight, Maureen Quinn of Lake St. Catherine was the top seed in the Second flight, and Jan Edwards was the top seed in the Third flight.

The first round of matches began at 8:00 am on Saturday in weather that was only slightly improved over Friday's downpour.  Winners of the first round advanced to play again Saturday afternoon.  The final matches were held on Sunday finally in bright sunshine.

Cindy Paquet was the winner in the Championship flight defeating Kathy Allbright of Crown Point in a close 2-1 match.  Kathy defeated both Kristin Turcotte-Mahoney and Andrea Brown on Saturday coming from behind with birdies in the closing holes of both matches.  Kathy Domenicucci of Rutland won the First flight defeating Ellen Currie, another Crown Point player.  Regi Wahl of Williston defeated Maureen Quinn in the Second flight and Missy Jasmin of Rutland defeated Jan Edwards of Copley in the Third flight.

The match play format is a lot fun and the tournament is expected to grow in popularity just as the Mid-Am Championship has grown.
