Ethelyn Bartlett, of Champlain
Country Club, won the 2003 Mid-Amateur championship by a convincing six-stoke
margin over former three-time winner Ann O'Day of
Williston. Ethelyn
surged into the lead with a fine 75 in the opening round to give her a
three-stroke lead over Mary Jane Shomo of Rutland. Pre-tournament
favorites, defending champion Andrea Brown, Mary Anne Levins, and Ann O'Day,
all managed only to shoot rounds of 80 putting them five strokes off Ethelyn's
pace.
Sunday's round saw nearly all of the top contenders scoring higher than on Saturday. Ethelyn shot an 82 which was tied for the low round of the day with Liz Walker. Everyone else lost ground to Ethelyn. Andrea was only one over par through the first eight holes and had drawn to within two strokes at that point, however, she had two triple bogies on the back nine to fall back. Ann O'Day had the best round of the day going until taking a nine on the treacherous 18th hole.
Ethelyn has always played well in tournaments held at her home course. Two years ago, she won the Seniors' Championship at Champlain shooting a 76 in the opening round of that tournament. Last year, in the State Amateur, she finished in tenth place.
The low net trophy went to
Jayne Magnant of West Bolton with a two-day net total of 135. She was
also six strokes ahead of her nearest net contender Ellen Sheffer of Neshobe.
