Janice Yates Passes Away

Janice Yates, of Rutland Country Club, passed away Sunday morning.  She suffered a second severe stroke three weeks ago and had been in coma since that time.  She suffered a first major stroke earlier this summer.  She died peacefully at home with her family.  She will be missed not only by the Rutland golfers, but by all of us who knew her.  Below is her obituary which appeared today in the Rutland Herald.  Her family has indicated that donations will go to the VSWGA to support Vermont junior girls' golf.  See below for details.

PROCTOR - Janice L. Yates, 67, died October 25, 2003, at her home surrounded by her family.


She was born in Rutland on June 5, 1936, the daughter of John J. and Mary E. (Cereghino) Lanzillo.  She was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy, class of 1953, and College of Our Lady of the Elms, Class of 1957.


As an avid golfer, bowler, sports enthusiast, and a devoted wife and mother, she was constantly "on the go".  She did not allow any grass to grow beneath her feet.  She was an active member of the Rutland and Proctor-Pittsford Country Clubs, serving on many woman's golf tournament committees and was the handicap chairperson.  In 1952, she was the Vermont Women's (Junior) Amateur Golf Champion.  Janice was also a longtime member and treasurer of the Marble Valley Women's Bowler's Association.  As an active supporter and participant of her family's activities and passions, she followed them in their endeavors whether it be traveling, bike racing or birding.  She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America at St. Dominic's of Proctor.  Part of her employment included P&C Foods and Rutland City Schools as a para-educator.


Survivors include her husband of 39 years, David S. Yates of Proctor, daughter, Mary E. Yates of Bristol, Vt; two sons, D. Spencer Yates, Jr., his wife Cara and their children, Elise Mary and Carson David Alexander of Sutton, Mass., and John S. Yates and his wife Lori of Littleton, N.H.; four brothers, Thomas L. Lanzillo of Rochester, NY, John J. Lanzillo, Jr. and his wife Jean of Richardson, Texas, Robert W. Lanzillo and his wife Karen of Rochester, NY, and James V. Lanzillo and his partner Linda Sichak of Rochesterk of Rochester; sister-in-law, Grace Ford of Mesa, Az.; two aunts, Jenny Cole and Yolanda Marro, both of Rutland and one uncle, Jack Lanzillo of Springfield, Mass,; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Janice was predeceased by a brother, Louis Fox in 1988.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in support of junior girls golf coordinated through the Vermont State Women's Golf Association, and mailed to her daughter at 867 Briggs Hill Road, Bristol, VT. 05443.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home, Rutland.  The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Dominic's Church, Proctor.  Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Rutland.
