Andrea Browns Wins State Amateur Championship
Andrea Brown of Williston Country Club
won her first VSWGA State Amateur Championship Wednesday at the Country Club
of Barre. Andrea opened the tournament in convincing fashion
firing a 72 on day one of the competition forcing the rest of the field to
play catch-up. The second day of play saw much of her lead dwindle as
she struggled with a 80. In one of the most closely contested
competition in recent years, Andrea headed into the final round of play with a
slim one stroke lead over New Englands champion Reggie Parker of Ekwanok, a
two stroke lead over Rutland's Kristin Turcotte-Mahoney, and a three
stroke
lead over Ashlee Marcell of Proctor-Pittsford. As the final round played
out, Andrea increased her lead to three strokes heading into the final hole
and the focus of the competition turned to the battle for the runner-up slot
with Kristin, Reggie and Ashlee all tied. All three players had birdie
putts, but Kristin was able to get up and down from the fringe of the par-5 in
two to secure her second place finish. Reggie and Ashlee were tied for
third.
One of the highlights of the tournament was the outstanding play of the juniors in the field with four juniors finishing in the top ten. Molly Aronsson of Burlington Country Club won the award for top junior in dramatic fashion by sinking an eagle putt from the fringe of the final hole to edge out local favorite Kimberly Wong of Barre by one stroke. Molly finished in fifth place with a total of 238, with Kim one stroke back at 239 in 6th place.. Allison Webb of Rutland Country Club finished in a 7th place tie with a 243 total while Catherine Shomo, also of Rutland, was tied for 10th at 245.
Ginnie Vogel of Crown Point continued her outstanding season firing an opening round of 74 and finishing in a 7th place tie with a 243 total. She was the runner-up to Reggie Parker in this year's Seniors' Championship and the Legend winner at the New Englands. Other top ten winners were Andy Raymond of Neshobe in 9th and Mary Anne Levins of Rutland in a 10th place tie.
Rhonda Colvard of Burlington Country Club won the net honors with a net of 206, two strokes better than 2nd net winner Linda Duncan of Vermont National Country Club.
The Buxton Cup went, once again, to the powerful Rutland Country Club team with a total score of 715. Williston was second with a 736 total while Burlington was third at 739.

The Country Club of Barre provided an excellent challenge for the field of 92 with an emphasis on course management and the short game. Many of the pin placements proved difficult for the players and three and four putt greens were common. The course was in excellent condition in spite of the heavy rain on Tuesday night and weather was perfect all during play.
