Essex Junction native, Sue Horton finished in a 14th place tie in the LPGA sectional qualifier at the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Florida. The qualifier, held October 5-8, is the first stage of the LPGA Qualifying School. The top thirty players advance to the final stage in December at the LPGA International CC in Daytona Beach, Florida along with the top thirty players from the other sectional qualifier held at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage, Ca..
Sue was in third place after the first two days of competition firing excellent rounds of 70 and 71. An 80 on the third day moved her back a bit, but her final round of 76 for a 297 (+9) total was good enough for 14th place and, more importantly, a spot in the final qualifier. Libby Smith, also of Essex Junction, finished in 55th place and did not advance to the finals although she fired a 68 in the second round. The qualifier was won by Hong Mei Yang at 284 (four under par). Both Sue and Libby also competed in the Mission Hills sectional qualifier held in September, but neither was able to advance although Libby again played a strong second round with a 69 missing the top thirty by just 3 strokes.
Sue won the Vermont State Amateur Championship in 1995, 1997, and 1998 with a runner-up finish in 1996. She was also the runner-up in the 1998 New England Championship at the Country Club of Barre losing to Laura Torrissi in sudden death. Sue has been playing on the Futures Tour for the past several years.
Best of luck to Sue in December. You can follow her play at www.lpga.com.
