Cindy Paquet Wins Seniors'
Cindy Paquet of Essex won the Ruth
Raymond Jones Memorial Seniors' Championship over the sun-drenched Ralph Myhre
Golf Club in Middlebury. After the opening round of play, Cindy had a
five-stroke lead over Mary Corey of Cedar Knoll and a six-stroke lead over
two-time champion Ethleyn Bartlett of Champlain. Several players
were tied at eight strokes back including Janet Austin of Burlington, Carolyn
Swiatek of Burlington, Betty Hanson of Sugarbush, Susan Catlin of Barre, and
Eva Mastalos of the host club. In the second round, Cindy added an 81 to
her opening 78 for her third victory in four years. Ethelyn edged out Mary by one stroke for
second place. Ethelyn also won the Super Senior trophy. Janet
Austin, playing very steady golf with a pair of 86's, finished in fourth place
and also won the Legend trophy.
Carolyn Swiatek, also with a pair
of 86's, won the traditional low
net prize of a golf bag in a sudden death
playoff over Linda Evans of Brattleboro. Both players were tied with
two-day net scores of 136. The fewest putts award went to Sue Ginnett of
Newport with 27 putts in the opening round of play.
The 9-hole Tournament featured four players: Mary Woodward, Bonnie Briggs, and Mimi Emory all of Lake Morey and Ann Paquet of Essex. Ann came from behind with 53 over the tough back nine on Thursday to win the event.
The newly instituted Pat Job Cup for the club team with the three lowest net scores over the two days went to Burlington Country Club with a total of 422 edging the host Ralph Myhre club by just three strokes.
