Jeanne Morrisey, Andrea Brown, Mari Harter
Andrea Brown of Williston won her second Mid-Amateur championship Sunday at the Country Club of Barre firing two steady rounds of 77 to win by seven strokes over Jeanne Morrissey of Williston and Mari Harter of Orleans. Andrea used her excellent short game to secure the victory over a wet Barre course which was playing longer than usual. As much rain as there was in the area over the weekend, amazingly and thankfully, the tournament was held without rain.
Andrea, who was the only player to shoot rounds in the seventies on both days, held a slim one stroke margin over Mary Brush of Burlington and a two stroke margin over Jeanne and Mari after Saturday's round. On Sunday, no one was able to make a move to catch Andrea and she coasted to the victory with a two-day total of 154.
The net division provided some
excitement with a three-hole sudden death playoff for the first net trophy between Diane
Jones of Lake Morey and Martha Ianelli of West Bolton. The playoff was
won by Diane. Both players had a net total of 132 (10 under).
The first Margaret Dick Cup for the team competition went to the Williston club with a point total of 458. Burlington Country Club was second with a total of 467. The trophy goes to the club team with the two lowest gross scores and one lowest net score for two days..
The highlight of the tournament may well have been the fireworks display over the 9th hole after the banquet on Saturday evening.
