Molly Aronsson Wins State Am in Playoff

17 year old Molly Aronsson of Burlington Country Club won her first state amateur championship in dramatic style with a three-foot birdie hole on the first hole of a sudden death playoff with Tiffany Maurycy of Williston Country Club.  Tiffany trailed Molly by one stroke going into the final round but tied Molly with a long birdie putt on the 16th hole.  The two players were all even going into the 18th hole where Tiffany put her second shot nicely on the green about 18 feet below the pin.  Molly's second shot was on the bank on the left side of the green leaving her a difficult downhill chip which she calmly put four feet from the hole.  Tiffany's birdie putt just missed and Molly sank her putt to force the playoff with totals of 229.

On the first hole of the playoff, with a storm approaching, both players drove in the right rough and then put their second shots just short of the par 5 first green.  Tiffany's chip ran by the pin by about 8 feet while Molly's chip stopped three feet to the right of the pin.  Tiffany's putt just missed and Molly calmed sank the 3-footer for the win.

This is believed to be the first time in VSWGA history that a junior player has won the championship.  Libby Smith and Holly Reynolds had both already turned 18 when they won their first championship.  This is also the first playoff since 1988 when Karen Wilder defeated Linda Mandros at Sugarbush.  Vermont's talented group of junior players came to the forefront with four junior players in the top ten: Molly, Catherine Shomo, Teo Poplawski, and Kimberly Wong.

With three players in the top ten, Williston Country Club won the Buxton Cup with a total of 723, five strokes better than Rutland Country Club.  Burlington Country Club was third with 741.

On the net side, Ellen Sheffer of Neshobe took the low net prize with a total of 212, three strokes better than Lisa Johnson of Lake Morey.  Janet Austin was third at 218.
