NEW ENGLAND WOMEN’S
GOLF ASSOCIATION
52nd CHAMPIONSHIP
Abenaqui Country Club
Rye Beach, New Hampshire
June 24 – June 26, 2008
NEWGA
is a women’s amateur golf association, established in 1956, comprised of one
member association from each of the six New England states. The Championship
field consists of 108 of the best amateur players in New England.
New Hampshire hosts this 54-hole stroke-play competition every six
years. After 36 holes there will
be a cut to the low 70 plus ties. This year’s event will be truly challenging at Abenaqui CC.
Abenaqui
CC was established in 1903, initially as a 9-hole course, and has evolved over
the last century to be a truly remarkable, challenging and well conditioned
18-hole course, all in the space of slightly over 100 acres.
Several golf course architects and superintendents have applied their
designs to different parts of the course over the years and include: Alex
Findlay, Jeff Cornish, Manny Francis, Al Zikorus, Brian Ault and currently
Mark Mungeam. In the past, Abenaqui CC hosted the 2003 NEPGA Championship,
USGA qualifier for the Women’s Amateur, the NH men’s and women’s
Amateur, the NH men’s Mid-Amateur and various State Junior competitions.
The
New England Women’s Golf Association was organized in 1956.
Sixty-nine women competed in the first NEWGA Championship in 1956.
In later years Junior, Senior and Legend divisions have been included
in the competition.
Notables
among this year’s competitors are the 2007 NEWGA Runner-up and Junior
champion, Kim Wong of Vermont; 2007
NEWGA Senior champion Mary Gale of Massachusetts; 2005 NEWGA champion, Joanne
Caitlin of Massachusetts; 2004 NEWGA champion, Reggie
