Holly Reynolds Wins Eighth Championship

Holly Reynolds of Copley Country Club went on a birdie spree on the final day of the 2016 Vermont Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament at Green Mountain National Golf Club in Killington, firing a one-over par 72 for a three-day gross score of 227 to win her eight state championship.  This is Holly’s first win since setting the record of seven wins in 2012.

One the front nine on Wednesday, Mary Brush and Holly both had 40’s while Tiffany Maurycy fired a 36 to pull even with Holly and 2 strokes behind Mary.  Things changed immediately, however, on the tricky 10th hole. After two and a half days of very steady play, Mary took a triple bogey on 10 while Holly and Tiffany had pars causing a three-shot swing.  From there, Holly went on to birdie 12, 15, 16, and 17 for a back nine total of 32.  Tiffany birdied 15, but to no avail as Holly birdied the next three holes. Tiffany  was runner-up, shooting a two-over par 73 on the last day for a total 232. Terry Boyce of Killington GC finished in third place with 240 with Mary finishing in a very respectable fourth place at 241.

Miranda Milne of CC of Vermont and Jeanne Morrissey of Williston finished in fifth place tie with a totals of 244. Elizabeth Walker of Brattle was seventh at 252.  Carson Laderoute of Burlington and Kathy Kemp of CC of Barre were tied for eight at 254.  Kristin Mahoney of Rutland rounded out the top ten with a 255 total

Katie Goulet of Newport CC was the Junior champion with a 267 after three solid days of play, finishing in 16th place overall.

Patty McGrath of the host Green Mountain National club was the low net winner with a score of 212.  It should be noted that Holly Reynolds and Kathy Kemp also had net totals of 212, but were, of course, awarded gross prizes.  Junior player Carley Giroux of Newport was second net at 215 followed by Rhonda Colvard of Burlington in third at 216 and Patti Haas of Killington in fourth at 223.  Trish Wade of Green Mountain was fifth net at 225 with Barb Shiffler of Williston in sixth place at 226.  Beth Fappiano and Lucille Rogoff, both of Green Mountain, were tied for seventh net at 227.  Kim Barkyoumb of ?Was ninth at 228.  Susie Bremner of Rocky Ridge, Cheryl Hoar of Burlington, and Carol Armstrong of Green Mountain were all tied for tenth net at 229.

Burlington CC won the Paquet Cup with a three-day combined nine-low-gross total 751 over Williston GC (771), host Green Mountain National GC (788), and Rutland CC (841). Clubs must have three players competing in the event to qualify for the cup.

The last day of the competition was played under leaden skies and occasional rain, but the greens were still fast and the pin placements tricky for the 46 women competing in the event.

Three-time champion Madison Corley (2013-2015) did not defend her title this year.
