Vermont Wins 8th Straight Tri-State Tournament

The Vermont team overcame a 5.5 point deficit after the alternate shot play on day 1 to win an 8th consecutive victory by a slim one point margin over New Hampshire at Manchester Country Club.  Vermont traditionally seems to be strong in individual match play competition, and that proved to be the case this year as well with a third of the team winning 5, 5.5, or the maximum 6 points on Wednesday.

In Tuesday’s alternate shot competition, the teams of Reggie Parker and Terry Boyce and Jen Shaw and Dana Cassidy each took six points.  The team of Suzanne Neville and Chris Johnson took 5.5 points. Nancy Cole and Sarah Lee added 4 points, and the teams of Denise Barnard and Donna Mazut and Patty McGrath and Cheryl Hoar each took 3.5 points.  At the end of day 1, Vermont had 43.5 points, New Hampshire had  49 points, and Maine had 42.5 points leaving Vermont with a large 5.5 point deficit to overcome in order to retain the trophy and win an 8th straight tournament.

Two Vermont players won the maximum six points in individual matches on the final day -- Trish Wade and Patty McGrath, both of Green Mountain National Golf Club. Coming in with 5.5 points were Suzanne Neville of the Golf Club at Equinox, Nancy Murphy of Proctor-Pittsford CC, and Liz Walker of Brattleboro CC. Winning five points were Terry Boyce of Killington GC, Dana Cassidy of Vermont National CC, Nancy Cole of Lake Morey, Edith Hiller of Rutland CC, and Donna Mazut of Lakeside GC.

Alternates competed in a two-day stroke play event concurrent with the match play tournament. Ginny Chenoweth of Country Club of Vermont won with a two-day gross score of 181 on the par-72 course.

The Tri-State tournament has been held annually since the early 1950s. Each team is comprised of 30 players, plus alternates. The venue rotates among the states. New Hampshire will be the host state next year at Rochester CC.
