2001 Ruth Raymond Jones Memorial
Seniors' Championship
July 18 & 19, 2001
Champlain Country Club, Swanton, VT

Ethelyn Bartlett won the VSWGA Senior Women's Amateur at Champlain Country Club with a score of 76-85=161, four strokes better than runner-up Cindy Paquet of Essex. Ethelyn fired an excellent opening round of 76 to head into the final round with a comfortable 8 stroke lead over Mary Corey and a 9 stroke lead over Cindy Paquet. This is Ethelyn's second Seniors' championship. She won her first one at Tater Hil in 1997. Congratulations, Ethelyn!

The traditional Low Net prize of a golf bag went to Fran Barnhart of Lake Morey with a net score of 72-69=141. Ann Goodrich of Burlington, Mary Corey of Rocky Ridge, and Eileen Ranslow of Haystack all tied for 3rd gross with totals of 174.

The putting contest provided the most excitement of the tournament with a first round tie of 25 putts between Judy Geriak of Manchester and Sue Ginnett of Newport with 25 putts. Putts were counted the second day for a tie-breaker, but that also resulted in a tie with 28 putts. A putt-off was then held on the treacherous 18th green and Judy Geriak was the winner.

The Super Senior award went to Barbara Gonsalves of Basin Harbor with a score of 186 and the Legend award went to Betsy Pratt of the Country Club of Vermont with a total of 189.

Gross Winners

Net Winners

The controversy regarding the awarding of the Low Net prize has been resolved. The decision of the VSWGA and the Seniors' tournament committee is that the prizes will stand as they were awarded (shown above) based on the tournament guideline which states "The top ten Gross winners are chosen first then the top ten Net winners." The conflicting statement "The (the prizes) will be awarded in descending order starting with 10th Net to 2nd Net, then 10th Gross to 3rd Gross, then 1st Net and then 2nd Gross and to Champion." applies only to the order in which the prizes are presented. This may, in fact, be a departure from the way the winners were traditionally chosed for the Seniors'. This will be addressed by the Board at a later date. We apologize to all those prize winners affected by the confusion and congratulations on your good play.
